^ born 75 years ago <LL • along with the Strawberry Hill Races, Colonial Downs near Richmond has extended the jump racing craze to Virginia’s only parimutuel racetrack.
Long a crowd-pleaser at the old State Fairgrounds in downtown Richmond, the Strawberry Hills races found themselves homeless four years ago when the fair’s turf track was plowed under and paved for NASCAR. Colonial Downs, in operation east of Richmond since 1997, stepped in as savior, hoping to attract the family-oriented crowd of 10,000-20,000 fans that had regularly attended the Strawberry Hills meet.
Colonial knocked it out of the ballpark with the experiment, fashioning a summer steeplechase series and capitalizing on the more wholesome nature of steeplechasing (except at Colonial Downs and other one-day major track
