I enjoyed reading the letter to the editor from
Lee Bird in last week's paper. Mr. Bird recounted the wisdom of a Chinese philosopher and appliecT that wisdom to our presidential election.
However, it seems to me that you can always find a Chinese proverb or a Chinese fortune cookie that supports whatever position ypu want to take on a given matter. That is why I am thankful that our great nation is not based on Chinese philosophy. Rather, our nation is rooted in Biblical values. The advantage of Biblical values is that they do not shift from one season to the next, they do not depend on your birth year, and they do not change depending on which candidate is running for political office.
Long before Mr. Bird's Chinese philosopher lived, King Solomon ruled the nation of Israel. He ruled the most prosperous nation in ancient history. Solomon became a great ruler because he sought wisdom from God. According to the Biblical account, God favored Solomon because he sought wisdom and not riches. Because he sought wisdom and not riches, God gave him both.
If any nation in modem times has equaled the prosperity of Israel under Solomon, it would be the United States. At the foundation of this nation were men who, like Solomon, sought after wisdom and not riches. They set out on a great venture to form a nation dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, and that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights.
They sought to form a nation based on the principle that we should practice Christian forbearance, love and charity toward one another. They set out to form a nation "of the people, by the people and for the people." They set out to form a nation of "laws" and not of men. Because our forefathers sought wisdom and not riches, our nation has received both from the hand of God.
However history proves that humans are "flawed" beings. It seems we cannot stand prosperity. Solomon ultimately fell because of his multitude of wives. His inability to be faithful to one wife did him in. The same flaw seems to plague our nation today.
In an elected democracy leaders are a reflection of who we are. We cannot point to Mr. Clinton for our problems. He is merely a reflection of our corporate soul. We, the peo
