Dr. William McCormick, owner of the Middleburg Equine Clinic, knows how important veterinary care is to the health and well-being of the active sport horse: he helped enact the Virginia steeplechase policy of pre-race vet checks.
“Lots of people don’t like the pre-race checks,” he said. “But it goes well, and sometimes we can stop horses that shouldn’t be running.” Every horse is checked for soundness just prior to racing in a Virginia steeplechase.
“I mean, as a vet, that’s the end you’d rather not see,” he added. “It would be better to see good preventative medicine and general care, perhaps more acupuncture and herbal cures.”
McCormick’s father Jamie, a trainer on the Maryland flat tracks, introduced his son to racing at an early age. Dr. McCormick said he rode more than 100 races and won 25, including three Rokeby Bowls and three Orange County Cups.
