Weight-for-age
The National Steeplechase Association lists a scale of “weights for age” according to a horse’s age, the race distance, and what month of the year it is. For instance, a horse racing in March of his 3-year-old year carries just 130 pounds at all distances, but the same age horse racing two miles in November totes 140 pounds. If racing 2 3/4 miles, though, the 3-year-old carries 133. By contrast, an older horse (older than 4) racing two mites in March carries 154 pounds; the older horse is assigned 156 pounds later in the year.
