In addition to the $3.1 million available on the National Steeplechase Association circuit this year are the sometimes fabulous gold and silver trophies awarded to race winners.
All races offer trophies to the winning owner, most also reward the winning trainer and rider. Many race meets hand out useful items in lieu of silver cups - crystal letter openers, binoculars, leather satchels have all been seen as prizes at area events.
In addition to “keeper” trophies, at most race meets perpetual trophies are offered. TVpically given in the day’s feature event, these larger and more valuable cups and bowls are usually held for just one year by a winning owner. However, if the same owner wins a trophy three times, not necessarily with the same horse, the trophy is retired. The owner retiring the trophy typically puts another up for a new prize for the race.
