In the October issue of Birder's World, ornithologist Carroll L. Henderson, had this to say on the subject: "....their (hummingbird's) migration is controlled by photo period, not by presence or absence of nectar feeders. Enjoy the hummingbirds at your feeders throughout, fall migration. Leave at least one feeder up for an extra month after the hummers are gone. This is for rare wandering hummingbirds that may show up at nectar feeders hundreds of miles from their normal ranges. If you take your feeder down too early, you will never know these rare visitors are in the area.
