but they had the best incentive fund for statebreds," he explained. "I did a little breeding, too — I had some broodmares that I kept up there even after we moved to Virginia."
The Moffett family moved to a farm near Lincoln in 1973, in the heart of Loudoun’s hunt country. Naturally, he started foxhunting again. But he said he didn't get heavily into steeplechasing until about 1987.
"From 1982 through '87, I bred and sold a few," he said. By 1987, he had moved all his horses to Virginia. And since then, he’s had some standout performers over fences, including Ace Ventura, Murray's Ruler, Double Found, and Echo Bush.
Murray's Ruler, the venerable 'chaser that won regularly on the Virginia circuit and under rules, was one of several Moffett found from the flat ranks. The horse — 1998 and 1999 ownerrider hurdle horse of the year on the Virginia circuit — was a great teacher and beloved by all who rode him.
Moffett described him as "a Charlestown special" that he got in trade in 1992. Racing under Moffett's colors, Murray converted to chasing, enjoying considerable success over hurdles before Moffett sold him in 1996. Murray continued winning for various owners, including Bruce Smart of Upperville, George Kingsley, Don Yovanovich, and Matt Hatcher, before dying as a result of a racing injury this spring.
