MIDDLEBURG — Veteran horseman Don Yovanovich of Middleburg occupies the number one slot on the Virginia Steeplechase Association's winning trainers list. "So far, at least," said Yovanovich modestly. "Who knows what the rest of the season will bring?"'
If past accomplishments are any indication, though, he needn’t worry too much. Since the early 1980s, Yovanovich has garnered 14 Virginia training titles, five riding titles, the BMW Horseman of the Year Award twice, the Masters Award and the Frances Greene Award — the last two for outstanding contributions to steeplechasing.
"I'm interested in working with quality horses for quality places — doing things right for people who want to play seriously," and to go beyond the point-topoints at Casanova or Rappahannock. "There's another 49 weeks in the year," he added. "I'm looking toward the top-of-theline hunt meets and good flat tracks. I came from that and that's where I want to be."
