Late migrants need the extra fuel nectar feeders provide in order to continue their trip south. Lee Trott keeps a careful daily record of birds at the feeder and in the yard. Her records show that we have seen hummingbirds as late as early October.
That should clear up the matter. Just remember, birds are great opportunists and "free loaders." If they can get food without foraging for it they will do so and return to working for a meal with no problems at all.
