The young thoroughbred is usually introduced to saddle, bridle and rider in the fail of her ‘yearling year,’ or at about 18 months. This Chenin Blanc filly is learning to walk, trot (shown) and canter with the weight of a rider before being turned back out to grow more during the winter. She will be brought back up for more serious training at age two. A horse may first race, on the flat, at age 2, over steeplechase fences at age 3.
