lb the casual racing fan, the shiny horses circling the paddock Saturday afternoons on the Virginia fall steeplechase circuit are just background ambiance — part of the festive countryside sporting events that headline community news. The spectator watches, with great interest, surely, as horses dash and jump, jockeys strategize and purses are won or lost. They watch until the cheering subsides.
Then they go home.
