Change is in the air for this fall's steeplechase season in Virginia. Though most of the cornerstone race meets remain the same, several important changes are included in this autumn's schedule.
The season kicked off with two days of racing Sept. 15 and 16. Friday racing took place at Colonial Downs, Virginia’s only pari-mutuel racetrack, located in New Kent County.
Two hurdle races opened the card on the Secretariat turf course, the nation's widest. The races were sanctioned by the Virginia and National Steeplechase Associations. The VSA-sanctioned Glenwood Races were held in Middleburg Sept. 16.
Point-to-point conditions and pre-season atmosphere gave many local horses and horsemen an easy return to competition.
