What should be the population of Rappahannock County? 5,000? 50,000? 500,000? In 1999, we had an estimated population of 7,664 people. Since the area of the county is 267 square miles, we had a population density of 29 people per square mile. By comparison, Fairfax County had 927,895 people.
Fairfax County has an area of slightly more than 294 square miles, and thus a population density of 3,156 people per square mile. Twenty-nine people per square mile versus 3,156 people per square mile. Quite a difference.
One way to zero in on a reasonable number of people in Rappahannock County is to use the Goldilocks Methodology. Goldilocks was very good at making judgments. When she entered the cottage of the three bears she encountered three bowls of porridge. One was too hot, one too cold, but the last one, she decided, was just right. Same with the three beds: one was too hard, the next too soft, but the last one was just right.
