A STEEPLECHASE BREEDING SURVEY
lliana Cacchione, an English native studying at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, England, is conducting a steeplechase breeding and racehorse questionaire’ as part of her MBA program in equine business management. The questionaire is designed to account for overlapping areas of involvement within America’s steeplechase industry, and the four sections address such matters as ownership, breeding prejudices and preferences, trainers and their association with bloodstock agents, dealers and public auctions. Included are sections to be answered by racehorse owners, thoroughbred breeders - stallion owners or managers, broodmare owners and farm owners, trainers, dealers and agents. A sample question, this one posed to racehorse owners: ‘What is your perception of the quality of jump horses bred in the following countries? USA, Great Britain, Ireland, France, New Zealand, other.’ The choices are excellent, good, fair, poor and undecided. Through the information she is gathering, Cacchione says she hopes to provide a supported statement about what type of horses appeal to American steeplechase horsemen.
