Double round, who won more than $300,000 on the flat, was originally in the flat racing stable of Jack Kent Cooke in California, where he enjoyed considerable success. In the money in 23 starts, he was a Grade III stakes winner on the turf.
Some soundness problems as a 6-year-old laid the Nodouble gelding up for a year, then he rebounded at age 7 to win even more races, but his soundness remained in question. When Cooke directed his trainer, former Virginia steeplechase champion Speedy Smithwick, to get rid of him, Moffett got the call.
"I bought him as an 8-yearold, and he wasn't that sound,'' he said. I got him in the summer, and he wasn't ready to race until the next fall. Dot did a magnificent job with him."
