On Sept. 23, 1864 terror :ame to the small village of Front Royal. On that day aetween 80 and 100 Rangers if Col. John S. Mosby’s 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry jntered the town to disrupt :he supply lines of General Sheridan’s Valley Army, who it that time were battling Gleneral Early's Southern farces in the main Shenandoah Valley.
This raid against the Yankees, by Mosby’s forces, wasn't any different than the lozens of other successful •aids the Rangers had accomalished in the passed 18 ■nonths of their existence. When this day would end one )f the most tragic episodes luring the war would occur.
After setting up their imbush and engaging the memy's ambulance train Vlosby's Men realized that ;hey were being surrounded ay General Wesley Merritt's Cavalry Division, who was folowing the ambulances. Vlosby's retreat became a runling gunfight towards their escape route, Chester Gap.
