Yovanovich started his riding career winning national level titles on "every problem junior horse there was." At 15, he turned professional — then dropped out of the sport to attend college.
The summer of 1974 found him between semesters at Villanova with no plans and little to do. His sister Joan hooked him up with Betty Bosley Byrd, who needed someone to break green horses.
"I hadn’t ridden in years," Yovanovich said, and though he and Byrd competed at roughly the same time, "she didn't remember me." Yovanovich gathered family photos from his mother's scrapbook to show his prospective employer. When they finally met, they "hit it off really great."
