origins of
‘Gold Cup’
The first Internationa] Gold Cup was held over brush in 1930 at Grasslands Downs in Nashville, Tenn. That year, the King of Spain placed a fabulous solid gold trophy into competition.
After the Tennessee meet ended in 1932, the event - and trophy - were moved to the Rolling Rock races in Pennsylvania. That meet ended a half-century later in 1983.
In 1984, the brand new Great Meadow course hosted its first races, offering the International Gold Cup as prize in its feature event. Great Meadow was developed as a championship venue for timber racing, so, when the Cup moved to Virginia, the race was changed from brush to timber.
The rolls of the International are filled with champions, in the brush years and timber, too. Hall of Fame steeplechaser Cafe Prince won the Gold Cup at Rolling Rock in 1977 and ’78, his two championship years. Other national brush champions to win the Cup were Soothsayer in ’72, and Athenian Idol in ’73. Timber horse t>f the year in 1985, the late Sugar Bee is the only horse to win the Cup over brush (in ’83) and over timber (in ’85.) Other national timber champs to claim the Cup include Ozymandias, Call Louis, Joe’s OK, Final Final and Saluter.
