On race day, Hyatt's duties take on greater scope. Caring for a horse away from home requires foresight and planning. Depending on the location of the race, time factors, and the number of horses being shipped, a trainer can .either accompany the horses and their grooms, or send the groom alone with the van driver.
In either case, Hyatt says, he goes along with "his horse" to ensure that the animal receives proper care. He also makes sure that equipment and medical supplies that might be needed are packed and available at the track.
