The halftime score at Monday's soccer match with Randolph Macon Academy should have been 1-1. Instead it was 1-0, Randolph Macon. Vinnie Caporuscio was awarded a penalty shot after an RMA violation. The one referee working the game was near midfield when he signaled for play to resume. Too far to see whether the ball went into the goal or not (and from an off the field angle, it appeared that it had), the referee signaled no score.
Disappointed and grumbling, the Panthers still battled aggressively, holding the home team scoreless until just a few seconds remained in the first half. Then on fast break soccer, the Yellow Jackets raced for the RCHS goal, booting the ball into the net before Rappahannock's defense even realized they’d been beaten.
At the half, the referee apologized to Caporuscio for being too far away to judge the goal on the penalty kick. But he didn’t add a tally to the RCHS side of the scoreboard.
