“So the way they did it, they'd peel one part and leave one part with the peel on. So the apple would be striped, one peel width off, one peel width on. That was the way folks fixed apples to fry.
“So some folks who dried apples would sell some dried with the peels off and some with the peels on. If the peels were off, that was a dried apple. If the peels were on, that was a snit.
“That’s the way I called it and that's the way it was always called.
“In 1930, the drought was so bad, worse even than this summer, although its getting pretty near like it - that a lot of the smaller creeks and streams went dry. Everyone had to have a spring house.
“Usually people were able to have a springhouse right near their home. That’s where you’d build a home—near water. Hut that year people kept having to move their spring houses farther and farther away to find water. We had to go way up the hollow to find a spring that was still wet.
We built the house and some shelves to set the milk and butter on. If it were to rain, we d have to set things farther up or they’d get wet. Usually the water ran through the house from an entrance and into a lower exit.
When it finally rained, both f I race and I were away, and weren’t able to put things up. When I came home 1 checked it right away, and there was the milk on the higher shelves. I wondered who had put our milk up. Hut that was the sort of thing a neighbor would do if he knew you were awav and it started to rain. I asked around, and nobody had done it.
Later I found the milk had muddy water in it. The spring had backed up so much that the water had lifted the bottles right up to the shelves and left them there. They were set up just as nice as if someone had done it. This is a true story.
