Thornhill says the slight increase in rain in September has helped the pastures. She says a few local farmers are able to make “some hay, not good, but the grass is greener. ”
Thornhill doubted that recent frost warnings would pose serious hazards to the pastures because there is “not enough growth to freeze!” Nor would frost hurt the fescue, she said; and the corn has already been silaged or combined.
In a letter to supervisors requesting a drought declaration earlier this month, Thornhill estimated the county’s corn loss at 40-80 percent. She also said the peaches and other fruit were decreased by 35-40 percent in size this year.
