“People Would Just Do
Anything For A Day’s Work
“Some folks would work all day for a dollar. Now, that was good pay—about what everyone worked for. I went to the city for work but 1 was lucky.
“People did all kinds of things. They went to find dead chestnut trees up in the mountains and take them to the extractor in Luray. A truck would take about two cords, and the price was $7 a cord. That was good money, even if half of what you made was the cost of the trip.
“People would just do anything for a day’s work—for a dollar. They cracked walnuts for 50 cents a pound. That was hard work. They’d gather the walnuts, dry them and crack them. Anything you can think of, people would do just for a little cash.
“Lots of people around here sold dried apples. Now everyone knows what a dried apple is but 1 was telling some people about snits and they wouldn’t believe me. A snit is a dried apple with the peel on. Most people around here, when they fried apples, they thought it was better to leave some of the peel on for taste and I think, for nutrition.
