would sneer and hand you the mop. They weren't going to clean it up. You made the mess — you clean it up.
How about the skills you needed for operating successfully in a cafeteria? You had to be able to stack all your food on the tray without anything falling off. After paying for your meal, you had to walk to a table, and this could only be accomplished "cooly" if you one-handed your tray. If you carried it with two hands, you were labeled a nerd.
It is surprising that with all of the bad memories most people have about cafeterias they still survive. But survive they do. As a matter of fact, they are an institution. And they are not just limited to schools anymore.
