Archie Smith Jr. of Meredyth Vineyards, Middleburg, reported this art of wine appreciation is literally an acquired taste.
"I don't mean to make this sound like something only for the elite. It's something that naturally happens. Anybody can play the game," says Smith.
He suggests people begin drinking wines they enjoy and can already appreciate, and experiment with the more sophisticated varieties.
"It takes a degree of sophistication to appreciate fully the really good sweeter wines. People in this country, most of them, drink first the sweet wines. I'm convinced it was planned by someone in the business
