Exciting lineup in the
point-to-point races
The Rappahannock Hunt point-to-point races will get underway on March 1 at Thornton Hill Farm in Sperryville. Setting up the farm to accommodate the races began on Sunday and, according to David Carter, more work is scheduled for this coming Sunday to prepare for the gala event.
The first race of the day, the Hunter Pair Race, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. In this event both horses and riders must have hunted regularly during the 1985-86 season with a recognized or registered hunt. The course is about three miles in length.
At noon the Homer C. LeHew Turf Race will take place. Horses must have regularly hunted during the 1985-86 season and be nonwinners under rules on the flat in 1985-86. This race is approximately three-quarters of a mile over Rappahannock terrain.
The Mary D. Slaughter Memorial Race is the next event. At 12:30 p.m. riders will race over two and a half miles of timber.
The Mount Salem Race for ladies will be featured at 1 p.m. The course is two miles over timber.
The fourth race of the day, the Rappahannock Hurdle Race, has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. This exciting event is run at one and three-quarter miles over hurdles.
Juniors who have not reached their 18th birthday as of January 1 of this year may enter the Rappahannock Junior Race at 2 o’clock. Riders may run in one, two or three divisions to accommodate horses and-or large or small ponies. Riders in this two-thirds-mile race on the flat cannot enter any other race of the day except the Pairs Race.
