Now “wooly bugger” was a term reserved for Cocks’ equine charges that were something special and although I never asked, I always assumed it meant a compliment of sorts.

“I was standing on the rail during the ’claiming chase and a flat jock was leaning on the rail next to me watching the race.
“At the end of the race the guy turned to me and commented, ‘Gee, that jock riding the number three horse sure must love him . . . everytime they come over a jump, the guy hugs that horse around the neck!’ ”
