WMAL Radio judged the maiden event 10 years ago.
“We almost froze to death! It was a blizzard,” Jackson Weaver recalled. “Still, those big station wagons put out quite a spread — silver, crystal, samovars, liveried servants.”
While the weather may have been cold and forbidding, the judges weren’t. “It was all very frivolous and light. Whatever we liked we said This is it!’ ” Mr. Weaver remembered. “It was all so good but we had to pick somebody. Our choice was very capricious. We had all the expertise of baggage handlers!”
The authority on tailgate offerings is Bob Montgomery, who initiated the Harden and Weaver Handicap, according to the WMAL duo.
“He knows everybody, every jockey, .every horse, every pile of manure,” joked Mr. Weaver.
Mr. Montgomery laughed when that accolade was relayed and modestly disclaimed any special knowledge on what constitutes a winning
