Baroque, or classic, old-European dressage teaches a rider to use his or her seat and back far more than the arms — a style that suited Mrs. Millham perfectly.
This style of riding is also perfectly suited for Andalusians and Lusitanos because they have natural balance and carry their weight on their hind quarters, thus moving with natural collection instead of requiring lengthy training.
It is for this reason, plus inherent intelligence and good disposition, that European monarchs almost always chose Andalusians and Lusitanos for their own personal mounts, a fact that gave Mrs. Millham the inspiration to name her magazine The Horse Of Kings.
Besides being an experienced and accomplished horsewoman — she reached Grand Prix level as a competitive dressage rider — Mrs. Millham is also an experienced writer.
She has had writing positions at The Fauquier Democrat and The Chronicle of the Horse and also worked at the city desk of The Rutland Daily Herald in Vermont. She has also written several freelance articles for magazines such as Dressage and Eventing.
When she first joined the American Andalusian Horse Association, Mrs. Mill-ham was the editor of the association’s newsletter, The Spanish Bit. Mrs. Mill-ham and the association tried to turn the newsletter into a magazine to promote the breed, but did not have the money.
The experience, however, started Mrs. Millham thinking about publishing some sort of magazine herself to promote the breed. Several Andalusian and Lusitano breeders liked her idea and agreed to support her with advertising if she started her own magazine.
Mrs. Millham’s editorial goal for The Horse Of Kingsis on two tracks. One is to produce a breed magazine to promote Spanish and Portuguese horses with horse show results, association news and care of horses. The other goal is to cover classical dressage and the philosophies and techniques involved in this style of riding.
