There have been a few, however, and last year the leading sire of steeplechase winners in America was a Virginia-bred stallion who still stands at stud in his home state.
As the leading sire of steeplechase winners in 1985, the stallion — Quadravan — had four of his progeny win point-to-points or steeplechase races sanctioned by the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. 1984 wasn’t a bad year for Quadravan, either, as three of his progeny won over fences, making him the second-leading sire of steeplechasers that year.
A 19-year-old son of Paul Mellon’s famous stallion Quadrangle, out of Paravant by Parnassus, Quadravan is owned by John D. Archbold of Middleburg. He was foaled by Shelley Warren at Grafton Farm.
