emotional maltreatment may exert even more harmful and long lasting effects. Emotional assaults not only have an immediate impact on the child, but they also affect self-image and feelings of self-worth and competence for many years, even into adulthood.
Much emotional trauma to a child is combined with other abuse, and children have told investigators that the constant belittling comments, humiliations, rejections, obscenities, and callousness have often hurt more than the physical assaults.
Courts are beginning to look more closely at emotional abuse and neglect; a few have based decisions to remove children on both the physical maltreatment and the emotional harm inflicted. Emotional damage is more difficult to prove than other abuse, and clear links between parental behavior and the child’s problems must be established. As with other forms of abuse and neglect, a major benefit of clear definitions is to set a minimum standard of care so that intervention can occur early enough to prevent long lasting problems.
The major purpose of all child protective services is to offer help to both child and family, not simply to remove the child from his home.
