mile. At Middleburg horses will run one mile while ponies will go six furlongs. The Old Dominion course for horses is also one mile, while ponies there go only half that distance. Ponies also go a half-mile at Fairfax, while the horses must run about seven furlongs.
There are good reasons why all of the nine point-to-point meets in Virginia do not have junior races on their cards. At some meetings there are already so many races that there just isn’t room to. add a junior race. In at least one case, the blame can be laid on Mother Nature.
“We’ve wanted to have a junior flat race at Casanova, but we just have never felt that the ground is suitable,” says Will O’Keefe, racing secretary for the hunt arid the general racing secretary for all the point-to-point meets this year. “Juniors must really have good conditions to run and in most cases the ground is hard as early as we run in February.
