Here, one of the most ambitious plans in steeplechase history will come to fruition with the $25,000 Virginia Gold Cup, sponsored by BM W of North America Inc.
The Gold Cup race meeting will have $65,000 to disperse to horsemen, all of which is sponsored by commercial firms. The four-mile timber contest is expected to draw the finest field of timber toppers in America, including the 1985 Timber Horse of the Year Sugar Bee. Double Sparkle, who sparkled his way into the timber ranks in his first season over the post and rail fences in 1984, is 4n work and expected to start the 1986 season the way he left off in 1984 — as a winner.
Le Sauteur, runner-up to Flatterer in the Eclipse voting and last year’s leading money earner, was successfully operated on for removal of bone chips in his hock after falling in the Temple Gwathmey last October. His owner Marianne McDaniel said in an earlier interview that her homebred expects to be in action by late spring.
Connections in Nashville report the steeplechase course at Percy Warner Park that will host the 45th running of the Iroquois Steeplechase on May 10 is being completely refurbished from turf to fences. This meeting will offer a hefty amount of purse money, but is limited to amateur riders.
