Although it has been said that Americans are moving fast toward becoming members of a checkless society, checks are still used to carry out the major portion of transactions within our financial system. (Credit cards have expanded in usage, but still do not have the impact of the checking system.)
For the consumer, The American Bankers Association says the following tips should help you to use your checkbook more safely:
Make your checks out properly with care.
— Begin writing at the extreme left of every line.
— Tightly fill in all spaces so that no words or figures can be added to your check.
— Fill in blank spaces by drawing a heavy line through them.
— Always use pen and ink-never use pencil.
— Write legibly. This will decrease the chances of forgery.
— Endorse your checks in the presence of a teller.
— Use one signature for your checks. Be sure it resembles the one on file with the bank.
Immediately record in your checkbook any checks written or deposits made.
Immediately reconcile your bank statement.
