gone “on to other types of racing. The 16-year-old Foxcroft student entered her first junior race at the age of nine.
“We hunted with Bull Run,” said Dawn’s mother Vicki. “And almost everyone there was involved in racing in some way and Dawn saw so much of it that it was inevitable. She’s a firm believer in kids starting as a junior, it’s the only way to get the experience of running at speed and negotiating the beacons. It’s also nice that the kids can be in a small group of people their own age.
“Then Dawn went on to the pair races to get some experience racing over fences. And last year she entered her first ladies’ race. She plans to race in the ladies’ races this year if her mare heals from a recent injury. She should be okay by the end of March.”
Junior racers will have an additional venue this year. For the first time Warrenton has carded a junior race for its meet.
“We wanted to expand the program this year,” said Race Chairman Douglas Lees. “This seemed like the logical thing to add. Kathy Williams has been running the junior races at Great Meadow and she volunteered to take on the job.”
Old Dominion added a junior race to its program about 10 years ago.
