tional contour strip in that all field strips are parallel and are a standard width. Widths vary within the region between 60 to 100 feet depending on slope, credibility of the soil, and crop rotation. Layout of the strip widths vary slightly to achieve a width that can be used by the wider, modern farm equipment. A fixed width strip with a field border of hay planted around the field has eliminated point rows and odd areas plus gives a grassed turning area and hay crop. Oftentimes the size and width of each individual farmer’s equipment is the final determining factor in the parallel strip widths. Attention is still given to the placement of the strips so that cultivation is done on the contour or across the slope as much as possible. Also, the combination of conservation tillage with the field strips increases their effectiveness.

Soil saving and erosion reduction may be the stated main purpose of stripcropping; however, additional benefits are very important to the farmers who utilize them. Ted Haberland, Jr. of Foxlease Farm in Loudoun installed 82 acres of field strip crops and plans for an additional 250 acres. He commented, “Obviously erosion control is the number one objective; however, it gives a scheduled rotation scheme on a large number of acres by using the alternate strip in a cropping program.”
