A bill limiting the height of pickup truck bumpers would hurt construction workers and other drivers who need a lot of ground clearance to get around, opponents of the measure say.
But supporters of the bill said at a public hearing Thursday that elevated trucks, known as high-riders, pose safety hazards to their occupants and other motorists.
Del. Robert Tata’s bill “will provide for much greater safety for those who travel the highways of the commonwealth,” Robert R. Pounders of the Virginia Transportation Safety Board told the Senate Transportation Committee.
Del. Tata (R-Virginia Beach) said his bill would restrict bumper heights to 31 inches or less on trucks weighing less than 10,000 pounds. The bumper height for pickup trucks averages about 22 inches, he said, but owners using suspension and chassis modification kits and oversized tires can raise that to 45 inches or higher.
