then the weekend of April 12 is made just for you, no matter where you live. For there are a quartet of sanctioned meetings tailored for just about every horse in any location.
The weekend kicks off the Maryland timber series at My Lady’s Manor near Glyndon — ditto for the opening Virginia meet at Richmond’s Strawberry Hill, while at Southern Pines, N. C., the Stoneybrook meet at veteran trainer Micky Walsh’s training track is expected to draw in excess of 35,000 race fans. Oxmoor, at Louisville, Ky., opens the Mid-West sanctioned series also on April 12.
The following weekend is as diverse with Middleburg Spring Races on their traditional Sunday, April 20. Horsemen will have traveled up from Tryon, N. C., where the historic Block House course that traverses two states and four counties in one turn of the track will have kept them busy.
At Butler, Md., the $12,500 BMW Grand National, center star on Maryland’s timber racing triple crown, will be the feature of the meeting. Spearheaded by trainer/rider Charles C. Fenwick Jr., who also serves as chairman for the Hunts Committee of NSHA, the Grand National meet includes a flat race and a maiden timber on its card.
