County, by Wilkerson; Virginia gleaning in England, by Withington, and Vol. X of Virginia County Records, collected by Crozier. In addition to lists of names, all of these are background to the early history of Virginia and America.
Books on the history of neighboring counties are added as they become available — Page, Madison, Frederick, Warren, and Fauquier. Their stories have a bearing on our own. A new title is Madison County Place-names. Another is Willis and Walker’s Legends of the Skyline Drive and the Great Valley of Virginia and Banjo and pistols: a tale of the Blue Ridge.
New books that give substance to our information on Virginia are Malone’s Miracle of Virginia, a school for statesmen, giving credence to Virginia’s reputation as “the mother of presidents,” and Virginia slave-trade statistics, 16981775, which provides important background to Virginia history and, incidentally, to early shipping history.
New titles in Virginia biography are two on George Mason as Reluctant statesman and Gentle man revolutionary.
Because of the nature of their content, many of these titles will be available for reference only, but our whole Virginia section affords good opportunity for research and browsing. In addition, a vertical file of clippings and other material relative to our county is being added to constantly and is available for reference, along with statistical information about our state. There is a microfilm reader for use with films we can borrow; we hope to acquire some microfilms to be always available, such as certain census records. The staff is ready to advise on what can be obtained from other libraries on Interlibrary Loan and can help with additional information available at the Rappahannock Historical Society or at the County Courthouse.
