Somehow February leads to thoughts of March, and March to thoughts of spring and summer. Once summer is in mind, it is not too farfetched to start reminiscing about Cleo Lewis and her hummingbirds.
“They’re not nice little birds — they’re very mean little birds,” admits Mrs. Lewis, whose life has nevertheless become entangled in theirs, at least during the summer months when the birds swarm to her house.
The role of Rappahannock hummingbird warden was reluctantly assumed by Mrs. Lewis around three years ago, when her daughter left her with a couple of bird feeders.
