For the past 13 seasons I have been privileged to travel the steeplechase circuit charting the race meetings in the country and scribbling for various publications along the way. Saratoga in August — Belmont Park in the fall, with a few journeys here and there to other meccas of jump racing such as Delaware Park and Monmouth Park.
Interspersed with the concentration of making an accurate race chart comes the fun of kindred friendship with the cadre of sportswriters, trainers, jockeys and owners that keep steeplechase racing close to their hearts.
When the great steeplechaser Zaccio was in training at Hall of Fame conditioner W. B. “Burly” Cocks’ Unionville, Pa., stables, it was both a privilege and an honor not only to live just a mile away, but to be on friendly terms with that genial man and converse with him about the progress of his stable star.
“He's just fine,” Cocks would report. “He bit the dog, Bubba (his groom since a yearling) and everybody else who walked too near his stall door this morning. That ‘wooly bugger’ is something else.”
