and those in Northern Kentucky, where the meet will take place on property adjacent to the Greater Cincinnati airport, just across the road from Latonia Racetrack.
Horses actually will be stabled at that racetrack. The day of racing will offer purses totaling $60,500.
Many of the preparations for the meet and construction of the onemile course have been handled by NSHA Steward Stephen P. Groat.
The Dixie Circuit commands the first five Saturdays with the majority of horses shipping out from their winter base in Camden, S. C. Here, large stables such as those of Jonathan Sheppard, W. B. “Burly” Cocks, Janet Elliot, Barbara McWade and others are able to prepare their steeplechase hopefuls without serious setback from frozen ground. Although Camden Training Center Director Dale K. Thiel reported temperatures hovering at the 10 above zero mark in the last week of January, the sandy soil there remains forgiving for working and schooling.
Jonathan Sheppard reports that Williaip L. Pape’s Flatterer is back in training in Camden, pointing towards his first start in the $50,000 added Delta Airline chase on April 15. The triple Eclipse Award winner, who is within $1,858 of breaking Zaccio’s all time earnings while racing over fences, will probably get 175 pounds for the two-mile chase at Atlanta, but his connections are willing to take the chance.
