“After we sort the answer sheets we establish a bottom score. Every student making that score or above is invited to try out for the team,” Mr. Flinchum continued. “We usually try to have 25-30 students in the try outs.”

“The paper test is mainly to see if they have the basic knowledge across the board. The format of the actual match is a lot quicker,” he said, “so we put the students up against each other with the first one knowing the answer getting the points for it. After several matches we note a certain number who are consistently better than the others. We work them down until a small group will prove itself to be superior.”

Mr. Flinchum said, “When it gets down to six or seven individuals we put all of them together and work them in different combinations to find out which combination is most effective. Usually by the first of October we will have our team.”

There are four starters and a substitute for the team. This year they are Captain Will Oliver, Jonathan Watson, Dwight Parker, Louis Moore, and alternate Henry B. Wood. The members practice and are trained for competition.

Mr. Flinchum explained, “We found that since they already have beaten the best in our school it really doesn’t do them much good to compete against other students from the same school. Therefore, we play a faculty group, the central office, or groups from the community each week. The community groups include doctors, lawyers, newspaper editors, nurses, architects, artists and the best educated group of people we can find. Our team has been winning about two-thirds of these matches.”

Member Louis Moore felt that after-school practice sessions are the most beneficial preparation for the matches. He said, “We get a feel for what some of the questions will be like
