Their route led around a sharp turn at the top of the field and around a cluster of trees. The horses came back into view and were setting up for the next pair of fences when there sat Dixon in his Mercedes, parked right in front of the fence. One horse and rider went one way, the other on the outside and met the fourth and final fence in stride.
Afterwards the two riders jogged back to their trainer, who still sat in his car, a wide grin splitting his weathered face.
To their astounded looks and questions, Dixon replied, “I just wanted to be sure you boys were thinking.”
