Herbert Matthews, of Orange, has also had strips in for a number of years. “My dad and I put these strips in back in the forties. The way we were working the land before was washing gullies into it. The strips fixed all that. It’s a lot easier to get equipment over land that isn’t lull of gullies. Anyone who has had to jack up a silage wagon to put on a new axle knows what I’m talking about. We wanted the strips because they conserve soil and produce better crops. They make the landscape pretty too. Farming should be beautifiil, not ugly. It’s worth it to work small strips. It really is.”
