The goals and principles set forth in the Comprehensive Plan presumably mirror the sentiments of the residents of Rappahannock County, and the broad outreach and lengthy plan development process provide positive indications that such is the case.
The first principle set forth in the Comprehensive Plan is “Tb encourage agricultural operations and ensure the preservation of the productivity, availability, and use of agricultural lands for continued production of agricultural products,” and the seventh advises that we “Promote only economic growth that assists in maintaining our existing balance and is compatible with the environmental quality and rural character and does not adversely affect active farm operations, forestry operations, residential neighborhoods, the tourist industry, and the county’s fiscal stability.”
The Cole endeavors are perfectly in tune with these and other Comprehensive Plan principles and goals and, because of their scope and potential, could aid other Rappahannock farmers in assuring the economic viability of their operations, and thus preserve that most precious of Rappahannock resources—its agricultural land.
