• Oct. 16 — International Gold Cup. Great Meadow was fashioned out of a crayfish swamp in 1983 to become exactly what it has: a classic steeplechasing venue to spotlight timber racing.
The Plains course does just that, and with its fall International Gold Cup races making a neat bookend for the Meadow’s spring Virginia Gold Cup meet.
With $130,000 in purses on offer, the seven-race card is easily Virginia’s richest fall race meet. In addition to the selfnamed feature, a $50,000 open timber slakes over 3 1/2 miles, the program includes a flat race, four hurdle races and the unusually-named “steeplethon” open steeplechase over a variety of obstacles for jumping specialists.
