short, 22 years, organized steeplechasing in Charlottesville dates to the 1820s. The old Birdwood Jockey Club sponsored races near the University, at a track operated by the owners of the local stage coach line. In 1913, a recorded steeplechase was held at Percy Faulconer’s farm, with entries drawn from “local horse owners and students at the University,” according to a Foxfield historical document.
In 1929, members of the Albemarle Hunt club organized races at the nearby Farmington Country Club; traces of the old natural brush ' fences were visible as recently as 20 years ago as huge hedges lining the golf course.
Tbe modern course "is set up as a rolling oval, neatly designed for infield party parking spaces to peacefully coexist with the mannered, outer rail homestretch tailgaters. The vast infield is laid out like an amphitheatre: it slopes downward from the homestretch so that railbirds can watch the horses all around the mile-long course, even with all that infield action.
The varied program features amateur and open flat races, maiden and open hurdle races, and the E.D. Vere Nicoll Memorial maiden timber feature to close the card. Purses total $41,000. Post time is 1:30
