Strength in numbers, they say. To wit: the National Steeplechase Association will offer 19 race meets during the longer-than-ever fall racing season stretching from Sept. 25 to Dec. 4. Purses total in excess of $1.5 million. Crowds are expected to near a half million across the circuit, which stretches farther-thanever this . year — from Genesee, N.Y. to Miami, Fla.
Virginia’s 10 days of jump racing action place the Commonwealth at the head of the class in many respects. The Glenwood Races in Middleburg opened the fall steeplechase season with point-to-point conditions. Two days of ‘ pari-mutuel steeplechase action are offered at Colonial Downs in New Kent County — Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 — the first two of four betting opportunities this fall. The Sept. 25 Fairfax Races in Leesburg feature the first of four hurdle races in the Virginia Claiming Series.
