When comparing our tax rate to surrounding counties, Rappahannock’s rate is higher than all those except Fauquier; but when you compare expenditures, the largest part of Rappahannock's budget is spent on education and in that category we have the highest per pupil spending cost in all surrounding counties. What is even more alarming is the rate of increase that is requested each year by the School Board, demands that would have increased our tax rate 15 percent if approved as requested. The School Board must start working to eliminate wasteful spending and high administration costs in our school system. B) Yes, Rappahannock can maintain a volunteer fire and rescue service (maybe not forever but certainly for a few more years). The Fire and Rescue Association and the individual companies must remain diligent in keeping costs low and eliminating duplication of services whenever possible. Also, ways must be found to recruit and retain new and young members, such as the free county sticker which I suggested in 1996 and was approved this year. Our Fire Levy could be managed better.
